Nick Ryan Gallery is proud to present The Surface of Last Scattering, a solo exhibition of all-new work by renowned Colorado artist Bruce Price. This exhibition marks Price’s second solo show with the gallery, following our inaugural exhibition, Bruce Price: Polyphony, in May 2024.
Adding to this momentous occasion, Price will also be the subject of a major retrospective, Bruce Price: Harmonious Dissonance, curated by Dean Sobel at RedLine Contemporary Art Center in Denver. Opening in November 2025, the retrospective will run concurrently with The Surface of Last Scattering, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience both the artist’s newest work and a sweeping survey of his career.
“The surface of last scattering is a moment in the early universe, about
380,000 years after the Big Bang, when the cosmos cooled enough for
electrons and protons to combine into neutral hydrogen atoms. Before this
time, the universe was a hot, dense plasma in which photons (light particles)
constantly scattered off free electrons, making the universe opaque. Once
neutral atoms formed, photons could travel freely without being scattered.
The surface of last scattering is not a physical surface, but rather a spherical
shell around us in space-time: the farthest distance from which we can directly
receive light. It provides a snapshot of the universe at that early moment,
effectively our oldest “picture” of the cosmos.”
